Active Breathing – Hiking in the Siebengebirge

After focused meeting sessions, the environment around Campus Thomasberg offers an ideal counterbalance. Right from the doorstep, your path leads into nature – for a short walking break or a longer afternoon tour.

Our campus lies idyllically at the base of the Ölberg, in the Siebengebirge Nature Reserve – one of Germany’s most beautiful hiking regions.

At reception, we provide maps and route suggestions, and we’re happy to organize guided walks or hikes – from light team excursions to more demanding tours.

A light loop through quiet woods and past the historic Heisterbach Monastery.

Heisterbach Abbey

Heisterbach Abbey is the impressive ruin of a former Cistercian abbey. It is picturesquely situated in the valley of the Heisterbach stream between Oberdollendorf and Heisterbacherrott.

From our front door, you can reach this historic site after a walk of around 45 minutes.

A Region of Castles

Drachenburg castle

High above the Rhine stands the magnificent Drachenburg Castle on the Drachenfels in Königswinter – a fairytale castle come to life, offering impressive panoramic views of the Rhine Valley.
From the centre of Königswinter, you can reach the top via a steep but rewarding hiking trail or take the Drachenfelsbahn cable car for a more comfortable journey.

Wolkenburg

The 324-metre-high Wolkenburg hill was once the site of a castle of the same name, the remains of which have now disappeared. The hike there, which takes about an hour and a half, starts right on our doorstep – nature, history and views included.

Löwenburg

The medieval ruins of Löwenburg Castle stand on the 455-metre-high Mount Löwenburg, which is the second-highest peak in the Siebengebirge range after the Großer Ölberg. It is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts alike.

Petersberg guest house

The elegant Petersberg Guest House, situated on the hill of the same name, is one of Germany’s most historic buildings. As the German government’s official guest house, it has played a significant role in the political history of the Federal Republic.

Rolandsbogen

The former Rolandseck Castle in the Rolandwerth district of Remagen, built in the 12th century to protect the southern border of the Archbishopric of Cologne, fell victim to wars and earthquakes over the centuries.
